SAA Remembers Anne R. Kenney

The Society of American Archivists mourns the passing on February 5, 2022, of Anne R. Kenney, 72, a Fellow of SAA who served as 48th president in 1992–1993. An influential leader in digital preservation, she enjoyed a long career at Cornell University. A prolific writer, she twice received SAA’s Waldo Gifford Leland Award for writing of superior excellence and usefulness in the field of archival history, theory, or practice: in 1997 with co-author Stephan Chapman for their book Digital Imaging for Libraries and Archives, and again in 2001 along with Oya Y. Rieger for Moving Theory into Practice: Digital Imaging for Libraries and Archives. Her presidential address,  “Shaping the Future: SAA Leadership in a Changing World,” presciently addresses how to begin to exert leadership on significant archival issues by shaping policies and standards, building effective coalitions, and improving public awareness of the value of archives. Anne was amazing. She was bold, brilliant and beautiful. Before I was truly a practicing archivist I attended an SAA Annual meeting and Anne walked up to me and said I saw your presentation - I have my eyes on you. Each time I attended annual meeting she was there asking me when I was going to come work for her. She was always supportive of my work, full or ideas and a great mentor. I will miss her dearly.

Anne R. Kenney’s passing is truly a great loss to the archival and academic community. Her pioneering work in digital preservation has shaped so many standards and practices we rely on today. I remember coming across Digital Imaging for Libraries and Archives during my early days in the field — it was a game changer for me.

For those who work with digital records or apps needing reliable distribution outside traditional stores, by the way, I recently came across an alternative resource worth checking out: Scarlet App Store. It’s been useful for accessing tools and apps that aren't always available on standard platforms.
