Program Philosophy
In harmony with the mission of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, a major urban research institute, the School of Information Studies strives to make significant contributions towards extending and enhancing the quality of information services and the promotion of information and technological literacy to a diverse society. The School of Information Studies is committed to excellence in instruction, research, and service.
As a part of its Master of Library and Information Science degree program, the School of Information Studies offers multiple courses suited to the study of issues in Archives and Records Management. The School supports several coordinated degree programs, with the MLIS/MA-History being most relevant for students interested in careers in archives.
The School of Information Studies offers a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Archives and Records Administration to professionals who are seeking post-masters degree study or continuing education. Students enrolled in the CAS select from a variety of archives-related courses, enriching and updating their knowledge in core areas of their responsibilities. The CAS is designed to enable professionals to alter their career path or strengthen capabilities already in use. For more information about the CAS, see the website at http://www4.uwm.edu/sois/programs/cas/archives/index.cfm
Facilities
Students at UWM's School of Information Studies attend classes taught in both on-site and online environments, encouraging a diverse student body and broadening the students' experience through contact with a wide variety of classmates. Both the MLIS and the CAS can be completed in an online environment.
On site, the School of Information maintains a variety of seminar and lecture rooms for classes, many equipped with network technology and software to facilitate use of technology in the classroom. Students have access to computing labs within the department and across campus. Because instructors teach in both on-site and online forums, they often combine the use of course software with traditional classroom methods to expand learning opportunities within their courses.
The School of Information Studies encourages students in the Archives Program by administering the Timothy L. Ericson Scholarship in Archival Studies. Awarded yearly, the Timothy L. Ericson Scholarship in Archival Studies honors the founder and former Director of the SOIS Archival Studies Program, Timothy L. Ericson. One $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a student from the MLIS Program or CAS Program. Eligible students may be enrolled in either online or on-site programs. See application instructions here: http://www4.uwm.edu/sois/resources/aid/grad/gradscholarships.cfm
Practicum/Internships/Assistantships Offered?
All students, both in the MLIS program and in the CAS program, are strongly encouraged to engage in fieldwork in archives and manuscripts. Students are placed in archives where they gain experience with archival professionals. Students can pursue the fieldwork in the greater Milwaukee area, or in repositories in their own city if they are attending classes in an online environment. Fieldwork experiences are developed in conjunction with the Archival Studies Program Director to insure the appropriate level of practical experience. The Program Director monitors the experience throughout the semester.
