Program Philosophy

The program at the University of South Carolina is designed to give students both solid training in history, as a basis for understanding the context out of which historical documentation emerged, and broad exposure to the technical and intellectual developments in the management of information that are the cutting edge of modern archival practice. While the most comprehensive education is achieved by students seeking the Joint MA/MLIS degree programs, in which two master's degrees are earned, students who already have either a Library and Information Science or History graduate degree can benefit from the combined strengths of both departments while enrolled in either one. This program effectively prepares students for careers in traditional historical societies and manuscript collections, as well as in managing business and government archives. The program provides both a broad preparation for all aspects of the information professions as well as specific attention to archival specializations.

Facilities

The University campus houses extensive manuscript, archival, and rare book collections for course work, internships, and related work. A complete preservation and conservation facility is available as part of the University Libraries. The University Libraries contain excellent resources on the literature of Library and Information Science and Archives Management. The Columbia area also has excellent resources for archival work, including the South Carolina Department of Archives and History, corporate archives, the South Carolina State Museum, Lutheran Synod Archives. Numerous other archival and special collections are available for internships and study, such as Clemson University's Thurmond Center, South Carolina Historical Society (Charleston), and various corporate archives.

Practicum/Internships/Assistantships Offered?

The joint MA/MLIS degree has a required 3-credit-hour internship (with option for up to 6 credit hours) which may be completed in local archives or at selected locations around the country (e.g., Library of Congress, Smithsonian, National Archives, private corporations). The MLIS degree program has an elective 3- to 6-credit internship program at similar locations. The MA degree program has similar options for internships.

Research

All three degree programs (joint MA/MLIS, MLIS, MA) have extensive research opportunities through independent study or other course work. The joint degree program has a required MA thesis.
