Program Philosophy
The School of Library and Information Studies offers exciting options for both undergraduate and graduate education!
Our undergraduate programs include the Bachelor's in Information Studies (BAIS), which is an interdisciplinary degree offers a core of technology and data science coursework upon which students can then focus their interests through guided elective categories. The Bachelor of Science in Information science and Technology (BSIST) is an applied Information Technology and Data Science degree that teaches students to design and build IT and data solutions with a user-centered approach.
Our ALA-accredited Master of Library Studies (MLIS) program* is a 36-credit hour program designed to develop your skills to work as a professional in libraries (school, public, and academic), archives, and data science. The MLIS can be completed fully online either part-time or full-time to fit your schedule.
Our online Master of Arts in Museum Studies is designed to help students solve real-world problems museum professionals face. With a curriculum that addresses museum management procedures, budget administration, exhibit and educational programming, and community interaction, students can take courses across various topics and customize the degree based on their interests.
To continue your education, SLIS also offers Graduate Certificate programs in: Archival Studies, Digital Humanities, and Data Analytics for Information Professionals.
The Ph.D. in information studies expands SLIS' mission and vision by educating students to thoroughly understand the discipline of information studies; develop expertise in using the various research methods necessary for investigation in the field; conduct effective, sustained research; and understand the ways in which information in all its forms is produced, recorded, organized, preserved, retrieved, communicated, managed, and used.
*The Master of Library and Information Studies program at the University of Oklahoma is accredited by the American Library Association Committee on Accreditation, with the status of Continued accreditation. The next comprehensive review visit is scheduled for Spring 2029.
Practicum/Internships/Assistantships Offered?
Internships in archives are available. A limited number of graduate assistantships are available in SLIS and in archival settings around the university.
