Program Philosophy
The University at Albany's archival education program seeks to prepare students for careers in a variety of institutional settings where records are maintained and made available for use. Knowledge of archives and records administration is presented within the context of the larger field of information and cultural resources. Students are expected to acquire mastery in the basics of archival theory and management, the preservation and use of archives, and the application of digital technologies in records creation and management.
Facilities
The School of Information Science and Policy is located on the downtown campus of the University at Albany, close to the New York State capitol, the State Archives, and other state offices. A library with strong collections in archival, library, and information science is located next to the school, and electronic classrooms and computer labs are also located on the downtown campus. The main campus includes two libraries, additional computer labs, and electronic classrooms.
Practicum/Internships/Assistantships Offered?
A 150-hour internship for 3 credits is required for completion of the degree. A second internship may also be taken as advised. Internships are available at a variety of archival institutions in New York's capital district, and internship opportunities at more distant locations may be accommodated.
Research
Students have the option of doing a major research project as part of their course work through a research seminar or an independent study. Opportunities for participation in externally funded research projects are available.
