Program Philosophy

In furtherance of the mission of St. John's University, the Division of Library and Information Science commits itself to excellence in the education of librarians and allied information professionals. To this end, we seek students as diverse as the people of the societies whose information needs they will serve. We teach these students with both rigor and compassion, as we prepare them for professional practice and responsibility.

Facilities

The Division of Library and Information Science is located on the fourth floor of the University's Main Library (St. Augustine Hall). The facility consists of three wired classrooms (including one microclassroom), computer lab, student/faculty lounge, the LIS collection, and faculty/administrative offices. Immediately adjacent to the complex is the Special Collections Room and Office, where library preservation and instruction in that area take place.

Practicum/Internships/Assistantships Offered?

The practicum is available through LIS 269B (Internship), a supervised experience of 120 hours in a library, archive, or other information center setting. Three academic credits are awarded to students who complete the internship.

Research

Students may complete up to six credits of independent study (LIS 901/902, Reading and Research) under the direction of a faculty member.
