Program Philosophy

The concentration in archival studies within the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies is a 43-hour program (as of Fall 2010) that offers a cross-disciplinary program of study as recommended by SAA. The concentration provides formal archival training that meets employers' expectations for professional archivists nationwide. The archives certificate  is an 18-hour program that offers indviduals who do not need a full master's degree the opportunity to obtain archival education. The online certificate option offers those who cannot relocate a chance to obtain archival education.

Facilities

ETSU is home to the Sherrod Library, a research-oriented facility, as well as the Archives of Appalachia, a unit of the Center for Appalachian Studies and Services (CASS). Located physically in the Sherrod Library, the archives houses approximately 7,000 sound recordings; 2,000 videotapes; and close to 7,000 linear feet of paper documents. The archives has facilities for conservation and preservation of paper documents, audio and videotapes, and film.

Practicum/Internships/Assistantships Offered?

Students may choose as one of their electives a practicum at a regional historic site or archives (e.g., Tipton-Haynes Historic Site, Archives of the City of Kingsport, Milligan College Archives.)

Research

Students have the opportunity to research primary materials on the history and culture--notably the music--of the Appalachian region held in the Archives of Appalachia, located in the Sherrod Library on campus.  Sherrod Library's collections support research endeavors.
